Civil Air Patrol Achievement Award - C/A1C Christian Tucci

Presented to an individual for outstanding service to a unit, group or wing.
This award may be approved by the group [or wing] commander.

The CAP Achievement Award has been earned by C/A1C Christian Tucci for outstanding performance during the 2010 'Cyber Patriot' High School Cyber Defense Competition.

This member displayed constant enthusiasm and strong understanding of the task at hand throughout training and competition, was an exceptionally important asset in achieving a qualifying place in the first round of the competition, making us the only Civil Air Patrol squadron to do so from the entire Northeast Region, and has enabled other participating members to effectively communicate and compete in the following Medalist Round by opening up his home and computer for our operations.

The acts of C/A1C Tucci as a cadet in the squadron, and member of the Cyber Patriot team, have embodied every CAP core value, and have exemplified the U.S. Air Force
core values of Service Before Self and Excellence in All We Do.

At no point in this competition did C/A1C Tucci divert from the task at hand, and at every available opportunity he has stepped up to pull the team together and keep the spirit of competition strong in every participant in the squadron. The actions of this individual have clearly distinguished himself above his peers throughout the entire endeavor, and it is with strong conviction that this member was recommended for this award.

The CAP Achievement Award was presented by Lt Colonel Jack Ozer, commanding officer of the Long Island Group at the LIG Military Ball held on 16 January 2010.

Wreaths Across America
12 December 2009

In a nationwide effort to honor veterans across the country, Nassau Cadet Squadron 8 has taken part in Wreaths Across America. As a part of this project every year, Civil Air Patrol units from across the United States aid the organization by laying the wreaths on the graves of veterans across the nation.

The ceremony that Squadron 8 participated in took place at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale. Despite below-freezing temperatures, members maintained the upmost professionalism and displayed a clear sense of honor while
taking part in this event.

Joining us were members of the Boy Scouts of America, veterans, cemetery officials, and other citizens who came out to help.

Throughout the month of November, members from all over Long Island Group participated in training for the Fall LIGSAR Academy. On November 27-29th the training was placed in the outdoor setting and members had to participate in real world scenarios and missions both during day and at night.

LIGSAR graduates are known as some of the best trained personnel in Civil Air Patrol's emergency service field, and all have gained important qualifications to be involved with real missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.

Graduates from Squadron 8 include C/SrA Ross Skolnick, C/A1C Ryan Doherty, and C/Amn Sean Whelan.

Photos of the academy can be found here.

Change It Up!
2 December 2009

With inspiration from the M*A*S*H episode "Twas the Day after Christmas," Squadron 8 will be running an exercise starting at the conclusion of the meeting tonight to the end of the meeting on December 9th. Officers in the command staff positions of Cadet Commander, Cadet Deputy Commander, and Cadet Executive Officer will be temporarily relieved from duty to observe how the First Sergeant and flight staff adapt to taking command.

The experiment will be a fun learning experience for everyone involved. For a Word document of the orders declaring this venture, click here. If you do not have Microsoft Word, you can also view a photo of the orders by clicking here.

Bellmore Street Fair
25 October 2009

With clear skies and beautiful weather, Squadron 8 took to the streets at this year's fair in Bellmore.

Eighteen cadets and four senior members helped bring Civil Air Patrol into the public eye once again, as teams were split up and spread throughout the fair to maintain a clear presence for recruitment, and availability in the event that our services were needed.

The Bellmore Street Fair is an annual squadron tradition. Home to our former meeting place, and offering the opportunity to improve our image as the only cadet squadron in Nassau County, this street fair is always a fun event that members look forward to all year.

Jones Beach Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
18 October 2009

On Sunday, October 18th, Nassau Cadet Squadron 8 and the rest of Long Island Group participated in the Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach.

Despite extremely cold weather and heavy rains, main cadets from around the group bivouaced the night before, and others woke up as early as 0400 to help support the walk.

Even though the rain and strong winds made conditions difficult, that did not deter thousands of Long Islanders who came out to walk.

U.S. Air Force Birthday
18 September 2009

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sends his wishes to the men and women of the U.S. Air Force:

Sixty-two years ago, President Truman signed the National Security Act that created a separate service dedicated to protecting America's skies, ready to fly, fight and win around the globe. The birth of the U.S. Air Force initiated decades of unrivaled mastery of air and space operations that Airmen continue today with Global Vigilance, Reach and Power.

Those early Airmen leveraged cutting-edge technology to take the fight to our adversaries, protect America's ground forces, and prevent conflict with precision and reliability. Orchestrations of American air power such as the Berlin Airlift showcased our Nation's resolve and goodwill with decisive effects. The Air Force's unparalleled readiness in strategic nuclear operations provided credible deterrence capabilities throughout the Cold War.

The Airmen of today continue that innovative tradition with integrity, service and excellence in air, space and cyberspace around the world. Today's Air Force delivers critical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities to theater commanders in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as life-saving aeromedical evacuation for our wounded warriors. Meanwhile, Airmen cover operations both on the ground and in the air with integrated support from space and in cyberspace. Your contributions are a vital part of the Joint team in today's fight.

The Joint Chiefs and I salute you, America's Airmen and the terrific families who support you in all that you do. Fly, fight and win!

Medal of Honor - U.S. Army Sgt 1st Class Jared C. Monti
17 September 2009

While this particular issue is not a news article for Nassau Cadet Squadron 8, it is important to take note of this occasion, as it is the sixth time that this nation's highest honor has been presented since the War on Terror began. We should all take the time to remember those who have earned this honor throughout history, and all those who have and continue to serve our country every day.

The citation reads
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Staff Sergeant Jared C. Monti distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a team leader with Headquarters and Headquarters troop, 3rd Squadron, 71st Calvary Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, in connection with combat operations against an enemy in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, on June 21st, 2006."

Color Guard Ceremony
12 September 2009

After a long period of inactivty, the color guard of Nassau Cadet Squadron 8 was reformed with four new cadets. In the timeframe of only a few weeks, these members trained and ordered equipment to perform in a ceremony at a soccer charity tournament for the Wounded Warrior Project at W. Tresper Clark High School. In it's first public display of a color guard in several years, C/SrA Brendan Deniston, C/SSgt Kevin Whelan, C/Amn Ryan Doherty, and C/SrA Christopher Cuzzo performed with expert precision in two seperate ceremonies.

This opportunity would not have been possible without the help of Matt Germaine, the coach of the varsity soccer team at
Clarke High School. Photos of the event can be found here.

New Website
30 August 2009

In efforts to maintain a professional appearance and easy access to resources for both members and the general public, this website has been made based on the format of AF.mil to get this task done. One particular feature that should assist all members is the access of almost every page of the website from any single page simply by hovering over links at the top.

New pages that were not previously available on our website include descriptions of each flight, along with pages for recognizing promotions and those who earn Cadet of the Month. Additionally, news feeds from the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force are provided and automatically updated on the right side of this page.

On the home page of this site is also quick access to the members only section for easy communication. Unlike in the past, you can register an account on your own, but must be a current member as shown in E-Services, the national resource for members' information. If you are not listed as a current member on E-Services however, your registration will be held until your name appears on the squadron roster on that site as part of our security measures.

Unlike in the past, the subject of upcoming meetings will not be provided on this page since that information is easily accessible on the calendar in the links above. As new updates are posted here, old articles will simply be pushed down as part of an archive.

If you notice any problems with this website, please contact C/1st Lt Christopher Rollins.
